Reiterates Wake-Up Call that Debt is Strangling Our Future

Carmel, IN – January 27, 2010

Indiana Fifth District Republication Congressional candidate Brose McVey today criticized the tepid plans of the Obama administration to deal with the exploding national debt, noting that Congress is about to add nearly $2 trillion to the Nation’s 12.3 trillion credit card balance.

“Our government is literally swimming in some $12.3 trillion – with a “t” – in debt. When you add up all of the I.O.U.’s hanging around the taxpayer’s neck, the total is closer to $100 trillion. And, with regard to Social Security, this reckless shell game amounts to nothing less than the greatest ponzi scheme of all time,” said McVey.

“Tonight, after pushing a budget-busting health care bill, pushing through an across-the-board budget increase of ten percent, and expanding Medicaid, the President is going to try to trick us with a modest, three-year “freeze” in spending? The American public must be getting dizzi. One day we need trillions in bailout funds and new programs. The next day we need gimmicky budget freezes. This silliness would be more amusing if it wasn’t placing the future of this nation at risk.”

McVey is making the rounds in the Fifth District, with an in-depth presentation on the nation’s public debt, offering a three-part approach to avoid the worst-case catastrophe, and seeking public input in a series of forums called “The Coming Storm: Can America Survive the Debt Crisis,” with sessions planned Thursday night, January 28 in Fortville at American Legion (beginning at 5:30PM) and this coming Saturday at the Tipton County Library (at 8:30AM) and the Hoff Room of Manchester College (at 1:00PM.)

“We have to save this country one Congressional District at a time, and I want the leadership on this matter to start right here, right now,” McVey continued. “Whatever you care most deeply about – education, health care, Social Security, or the War on Terror – will no longer matter if we don’t attack this fiscal cancer. Social Security, Medicare, pension protection and FDIC insurance are all backed up by paper I.O.U.’s, and there is no money in our nation’s pipeline to pay for them,” said McVey.

McVey challenged Indiana’s congressional delegation to throw down the gauntlet this month, and oppose the increase in the nation’s debt limit. “Statesmen of both parties need to stand up now and say ‘no more debt.’ Instead, let’s begin debate on massive cuts in spending.”

“Today, 5th District Congressional candidate Brose McVey released a letter to Indiana attorney General Greg Zoeller, calling on him to join other attorneys general in opposing the health care legislation moving through Congress.”

Dear General Zoeller:

By way of this letter, I urge you to join forces with Florida Attorney General McCollum and others in considering legal action against provisions of the current health care reform legislation pending in Congress, should it become law.

The legislation, as recently passed by the United States Senate, undermines rights, authorities and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution. The mandate that every American purchase health insurance, the unequal treatment of the States under provisions relating to Medicaid reimbursement, and the preemption of state laws, each ignore the clear intent of our founders.

In the coming days, as the Congress races to reach final agreement, you and other attorneys general have a unique opportunity to press these arguments to the leaders in Congress and the White House, and use your unique credibility to argue for changed prior to enactment. I urge you in the strongest terms to make this case forcefully and use every tool at your disposal to oppose this outrageous and dangerous affront to our state’s economy and our people’s freedom.

If as expected, Congress passes and the President signs legislation that maintains there unconstitutional provisions, I urge you to be party to legal actions to challenge the law immediately, prior to implementation. I will seek your counsel and guidance in determining whether I will take legal action, together with voters in Indiana, as citizens adversely affected by this troubling legislation.

Sincerely,

Brose

McVey finished by raising the prospect of leading a citizens’ legal challenge to the legislation, should it become law. “I will seek your counsel and guidance in determining whether I will take legal action, together with voters in Indiana, as citizens adversely affected by this troubling legislation,” said McVey.

If you agree with Brose in his fight against government mandates, new entitlements and unfair, new burdens on the states, you can offer your comment on Brose’s Blog, signal you support by “Voting for Brose” on his site, or made a donation to support the cause…

John V. Schneider and Corby D. Thompson

Conventional wisdom may be standing in the way of electing an energetic, new Congressman in Indiana’s 5th District. Many who want change are on the sidelines, assuming that numerous strong challengers will hand Burton an easy victory. Let’s examine this point of view, before it creates a “fait accompli.”

The “conventional wisdom” holds that most incumbents enjoy a strong “base” and that most challengers are unknown and underfunded (neither is true in the 5th). Therefore, multiple challengers would “split the anti-incumbent vote” and hand it back to the incumbent.

This district includes parts of eleven counties, from Peru and Huntington to Franklin and Shelbyville. If this were Burton’s old 6th District, he would have been defeated in 2008, when he won only 39.9 percent of the vote in Marion County (his home “base” since the 70’s), and only 44% in the doughnut areas.

The more remote, rural communities saved Dan Burton’s hide in 2008. Burton won 67% of northern counties outside the reach of the Indianapolis media (about 30% of the ’08 vote) market, and 62% of Luke Messer’s new home of Shelby County (4.6 % of the primary vote in ‘08).

So, should we believe that these rural, older, conservative voters are Burton’s secret, impenetrable base? Not according to leaders who live there. For example, in northern “Burton country,” McVey has already won the endorsement of the Chairmen of all three County Councils, in Miami, Wabash and Huntington Counties (14.5% of vote in 08 primary), along with numerous Commissioners, business and farm leaders. Mayors in Huntington, Wabash and Peru have each refused to endorse Burton’s reelection.

Insiders in rural counties stress that socially conservative, stalwart Republicans in Northern Indiana vote for the most familiar, politically conservative choice. However, voters in this northern tier were represented by Buyer, Chocola and Souder before 2002 and have little personal connection to Burton. John McGoff didn’t have the background or money to penetrate that fog in ’08, a luxury that Burton will not have in 2010. Unemployment rates within northern counties are much higher in areas where Burton won than in suburban Indianapolis, including Grant and Howard Counties. Burton voted against helping Detroit and the economic stimulus plans.

Perhaps most importantly, in rural farm and manufacturing communities, voters of all ages and incomes are hunting for bear, and this year, bear is spelled “p-o-l-i-t-i-c-i-an.” The candidate who does best in 2010 is the candidate who can earn the votes of angry, anti-incumbent, anti-establishment voters.

Burton’s camp likes to say the Obama-Clinton primary contest hurt him in 2008, as a few Rush Limbaugh and moderate Republicans apparently pulled Democratic ballots in that contest. Those voters will be back at his side in 2010, says Burton’s staff. Don’t count on it.

Rush’s voters are also Sarah Palin-loving, tea party-attending, anti-Washington voters, and when they come home in May, they’ll bring with them at least one or more soft Republicans, Democrats and independents. Common sense suggests these voters will support “anyone but Burton.”

Despite the pundits’ obsession to the contrary, this contest will not be solely about money. John McGoff had good financial resources in 2008 and a one-on-one shot at Burton (the same format most long for), and he lost. This is a primary battle, in a district where only 88,000 voters turned out in the busy 2008 election year, and fired up primary voters will know a lot about these candidates.

If Congressman Burton falls as low as I believe possible, the right challenger can win, even in a crowded field. Given that all of the current candidates are likely to stay in and have resources, I believe this contest will hinge on which challenger has the best balance of money, message, geographic base, and grassroots turn-out effort. If I’m correct, a challenger who can capture 25-30 percent of the vote can win. So, who is best positioned to win under these conditions?

McVey is the best man for the job. He has a balanced background of business, family and political experience and his bold, substantive vision.

He’s the only candidate from Hamilton County, where #25-30 percent of the likely primary vote resides, and where voters gave Daniels an 87,132-vote positive margin in ’08. McVey was born and raised there and is building a very impressive organization in his backyard.

His run against Julia Carson was more popular in the doughnut counties that it was in the 7th District, and he’s a regular on WIBC’s Garrison show.

He’s the only candidate never elected to public office, and the small towns, farmers and tea party groups (in Burton’s “base”) like his style, his zealous support for term limits and his unwillingness to accept PAC contributions. He’s the closest thing to an outsider in this field.

He’s the only candidate who knows and comes from agriculture. He’s a Purdue boy, ran several farm organizations in Indiana, and was Quayle’s ag guy (the Quayle from Huntington).

He has dedicated his energies to retail, face-to-face campaigning. He has traded stronger funding to shake more hands, attend more events, and meet more voters than any of the other candidates. His colorful RV is a popular and familiar site across the District.

He is a proven and highly talented campaigner, having managed Dan Coats’ 1992 win over Joe Hogsett, and he ran one of the best congressional challenges in the country in 2002.

McVey raised over one million dollars in his challenge to Carson. He will have adequate resources.

This District is a perfect bellwether for a Republican party that needs to show it can renew itself. It’s time for this diverse, rich community to roll up its sleeves, pick a candidate and MAKE one competitive.

I’m putting my chips on McVey.

Indianapolis, IN — Congressional Candidate Brose McVey today proposed the first element of a new Jobs 2020 economic growth plan that he would pursue if elected to Congress next year. The initial phase of McVey’s plan:

Calls on Congress to enact a six-month Payroll Tax Holiday;

Calls on Washington to cancel and suspend the remainder of the “stimulus” plan and use the unused funds from that program to pay for the payroll tax holiday, and;

Recommends that payback to the federal government of bail-out funds by banks and financial institutions be sent to strengthen the beleaguered Social Security Trust Fund.

“A payroll tax holiday will reduce the cost of labor, put real cash in the pockets of every American worker within weeks, allow employers to keep more folks on their payrolls, and requires no bureaucracy to administer. It is the kind of economic injection we should have enacted six months or a year ago,” said McVey.

“For the average Hoosier family earning $50,000 per year, this tax holiday would put over $1,900 in their pockets in the next six months, and it would do the same for their employers,” said McVey. According to the American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, there were nearly 400,000 people employed in the Fifth District from 2006 to 2008.
“If enacted by Congress immediately, my plan would begin work today and send a strong signal to entrepreneurs, employers, investors and bankers that we are committed to long-term, sustainable growth. Both are possible — and critical — if we are to slow the alarming Federal deficits that threaten our very future,” McVey said.

McVey’s proposal is being rolled out during Global Entrepreneurship Week, an effort by universities, schools, civic and non-profit corporations, and large and small businesses in 81 countries to celebrate self-starters and innovators.

“As a small business person myself, I understand the burden that our 15.3 % withholding places on our employees and employers. As the President prepares for an „economic summit‟ and Congress begins to consider a second stimulus plan, I want to set forth the kinds of policies I would advocate if I were in Congress today,” McVey said.

“My plan avoids “old school” public works projects like those in the so-called stimulus plan. It doesn’t pick winners and losers—like the clunkers and bailout plans did. And, importantly, it is fiscally responsible and would save the taxpayer money, when compared with the so-called stimulus plan enacted by Congress. To pay for it, I am calling on Congress to suspend further commitments of unused funds authorized under the current stimulus program, and to direct that funding instead at a six-month payroll tax holiday.

“Further, as banks and financial institutions rush to pay the Treasury back for loans and investments made by taxpayers, under the bailout programs, I am calling on Washington to send those funds for use in shoring up the Social Security Trust Fund,” said the Republican candidate for Indiana’s Fifth Congressional District.

In addition to today’s short-term program, McVey’s Jobs 2020 plan will include intermediate and 10-year goals and objectives, giving investors, businesses and the markets a clear pathway ahead into the next decade.

In talking about his 10-year economic growth plan and the need for a long-term direction for federal economic policy, McVey said that “we must begin to look toward the horizon and act now in accordance with a long-term, sustainable, across the board economic policy that will unleash economic growth for generations to come.”

Wabash, IN- Small businessman Brose McVey announced eight new supporters for his Congressional campaign – all past and current public officials in Wabash County. Supporters include County Commissioners Barry Eppley and Scott Givens, County Councilmen Randy Curless, Daryl Evans, Ted Little, and Gary Nose, former Wabash County Councilman Dean Eppley, and former Wabash County Metropolitan School District Board Member Jeff Dawes.

“I am supporting Brose McVey because he is the only candidate running that runs a small business and understands what it’s like to make a payroll and sustain jobs in this economy. We need someone with that background in Washington,” said Wabash County Commissioner Scott Givens.

Wabash County Commissioner Barry Eppley said, “I have known Brose McVey for years and know his passion for protecting and advancing Hoosier agriculture. Wabash County needs an advocate in Washington that knows the difference between a hay baler and a haymaker.”

“I am humbled to have the support of these influential leaders from Wabash County,” McVey stated. “These fine public servants have concluded that I am the best candidate to represent the values of Wabash County in Washington. I am thankful for their support and look forward to working with these leaders to improve Northern Indiana.”
The list of McVey campaign supporters is growing quickly. Previously, McVey has won support from State Senator Beverly Gard, former Hancock County Sheriff and State Representative Nick Gulling, former Hancock County Councilman Walt Waitt, former Hancock County Commissioner Brian Kleiman, current Hancock County Councilmen Jim Shelby, Tom Roney, and Dick Pasco, Huntington County Council President John Hacker, Hamilton County Councilmen Meredith Carter and John Hiatt, Hamilton County Assessor Debbie Folkerts, Hamilton County Auditor Dawn Coverdale, Hamilton County Recorder Jennifer Hayden, Hamilton County Surveyor Kent Ward, Hamilton County Treasurer Kim Good, Noblesville Common Council President Greg O’Connor, and Carmel City Councilman John Accetturo.
Also running for the Republican nomination in the 5th district primary are long-time Congressman Dan Burton, former Indianapolis Coroner John McGoff, Indianapolis State Representative Mike Murphy, and Indianapolis lobbyist Luke Messer.

Hamilton County, IN – Carmel businessman Brose McVey announced nine new supporters for his Congressional campaign – all serving as public officials in Hamilton County and the cities of Carmel and Noblesville. Supporters include Hamilton County Councilmen Meredith Carter and John Hiatt, County Assessor Debbie Folkerts, County Auditor Dawn Coverdale, County Recorder Jennifer Hayden, County Surveyor Kent Ward, County Treasurer Kim Good, Noblesville Common Council President Greg O’Connor, and Carmel City Councilman John Accetturo. Today’s announcement follows the recent decision by State Senator Beverly Gard to support Brose McVey for Congress. Gard’s district includes Fishers in Hamilton County.
“I have worked with Brose McVey and have seen the benefit of his experiences and passion. Brose is the type of person we need fighting for us in Congress. I encourage all Hamilton County Republicans to join me in supporting our hometown candidate, Brose McVey, for Congress,” said Hamilton County Councilman Meredith Carter.

Hamilton County Councilman John Hiatt said, “Brose McVey is the right fit for Hamilton County and this district. Brose’s work in agriculture and his experience making a payroll as a small business owner gives him the background we desperately need in Washington. Brose McVey has my full support.”

“It is truly an honor to have the support of these influential leaders from my home in Hamilton County,” McVey stated. “These fine public servants have come to the conclusion that I am the best candidate to carry the Republican mantle and represent our district in Washington. I am thankful for their support and look forward to working with these leaders to improve our nation.”
The list of McVey campaign supporters is growing quickly. Previously, McVey has won support from State Senator Beverly Gard, former Hancock County Sheriff and State Representative Nick Gulling, former Hancock County Councilman Walt Waitt, former Hancock County Commissioner Brian Kleiman, current Hancock County Councilmen Jim Shelby, Tom Roney, and Dick Pasco, and Huntington County Council President John Hacker.
Also running for the Republican nomination in the 5th district primary are long-time Congressman Dan Burton, former Indianapolis Coroner John McGoff, Indianapolis State Representative Mike Murphy, and Indianapolis lobbyist Luke Messer.
September 24, 2009 (317) 650-2131

Greenfield, IN – Hamilton County businessman Brose McVey, candidate for Congress in Indiana’s 5th district, is winning support from key community leaders in Hancock County in his bid to win the primary election next May. McVey was in Greenfield yesterday evening to meet with supporters who are encouraging him in the long fight.

“It is time that we expect more visibility and attention from our leaders in Washington,” said former Hancock County Sheriff Nick Gulling. “I have no doubt that we’ll get more from Brose McVey and that he’ll fight for the people of Hancock County.”
In addition to Gulling, Republican candidate McVey is winning support from a wide variety of Greenfield-area community leaders. The list includes prominent business people and those who’ve served honorably in public service, including Hancock County Councilmen Jim Shelby, Tom Roney, and Dick Pasco. Additionally, former Hancock County Councilman Walt Waitt and Commissioner Brian Kleiman have agreed to serve as county co-chairs of the McVey campaign.

“It is truly an honor to have the support of these influential leaders from Hancock County. As I’ve met with people in Greenfield, Fortville, and New Palestine, I’ve learned that many are disheartened with their current representation in Congress. They feel disconnected and want someone who is fully engaged with the needs of Hancock County. I intend to be that representative,” McVey stated.

Also running for the Republican nomination in the 5th district primary are long-time Congressman Dan Burton, former Indianapolis Coroner John McGoff, Indianapolis State Representative Mike Murphy, and Indianapolis lobbyist Luke Messer.
