My New Year’s Resolution

Brose A. McVey

As my focus, insight, fear and anger over Washington’s nearly criminal acts increases, so does my desire to awaken and enlist a mandate from a broad coalition of my neighbors.

If we want to turn around the reckless policies of the last 80 years in Washington, we’ll need a big-tent coalition.  That means we must awaken, educate, or scare enough folks who don’t care, don’t know, or aren’t paying attention, into governing.

Here is my dilemma.  For every “Republican” in the 5th District who is as mad and as heartsick as I am, there are two who think “Rush Limbaugh is the problem” and just want us to “get along.”  These latter folks are either much more comfortable with an exploding government than I am or they haven’t done their homework.  So, as a person who wants to lead and effect real change…how do I connect with them?

In an average holiday gathering of Republican-oriented people within the diverse 5th District, there are three or four crazed conservatives (like me), three statesman-loving, Rush-resenting, just-get-along moderates, and two closet liberals who showed up to humor the host.  If I arrive at this familiar scene and share what I really think—that we are already past the tipping point, and this country is approaching an apocalyptic implosion—I shock, depress or send home the latter two-thirds of the audience.  This motivates those same folks to vote for another go-along-to-get along politician.  But, if I tone down my rhetoric, reassure them by muttering some tired language about change, hope and the future, I do them all a great injustice.

Grappling with this dilemma is not an exercise in trying to be everything to everybody.  Rather, it is a very real challenge for those of us who know that we must forge a broader coalition between these two camps and govern within the rules of our democratic process.

Well, with the help of my family –pressed into service as part focus group and part kitchen cabinet — I have cleared my head and resolved to let ‘er rip in 2010.
I’m going to become a flame-throwing, he…- raising educator! I’m going to work to make the 5th District a laboratory of American democracy.  I’m going on the road to preach the gospel of too much debt, too little freedom, too much government, a corrupt and bankrupt political class of thought which is a looming threat much more destructive than a civil war or radical Islam.

Through my campaign I’m going to create a referendum on “the problem.”  If the latter two-thirds of the electorate, who want folks like me to tone down and be “nice” choose to vote for someone else, then so be it. They have plenty of choices.

Prepare to learn the facts about an exploding government, and the ticking time bomb already lit by both parties over the past decades, and the same socialism now being sold in Washington!
